The Crow's Nest
The population of Edinburg doubled this past Wednesday night---and how glad we are that it did!!! Trinity Lutheran Church held their annual Turkey Supper and 500 people came to enjoy turkey with “all the trimmings”. Once again, our annual event was a huge success. We roasted 20 turkeys (22 – 24 lbs each), peeled 300 lbs potatoes, sliced 115 pounds of carrots and toasted 32 loaves of bread. Whew, I get tired just thinking about it! A sign-up sheet was posted at Trinity asking for pie donations. We needed 60 pies---but ended up with 97!!!! Can you imagine? There was pecan pie, banana cream pie, apple and peach, pumpkin and lemon. Many of the pies had mile high meringues on top. What a beautiful sight for pie lovers. Of the 500 meals served, 170 were take-outs. That was a record. Now it is to get through the Lutefisk Dinner at the Park River Bible Camp Sep 30th.
This leads me to offer an OPEN INVITATION to anyone reading the Crow’s Nest who would like to come to a little town to live. All that is required is a desire to be a part of a great community that has many niches that can be filled through volunteerism. All we ask for is a willing heart, a love of involvement and the rest will take care of it’s self. The pay-off is great as Edinburg is a wonderful place to live. It has fantastic summers with days that last forever and winters that are enjoyable as we manage to make the most of the long winter days with activities for everyone.
Autumn is definitely here. Not only because the calendar says so, but because we had a touch of frost and our furnace turned on a couple of times! It seems one day the air conditioner is needed then the next day brings the need for a sweater. I am through “gardening” for the season. All the cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, leeks and onions have been harvested and gathered indoors for our winter enjoyment. I enjoy the change of seasons, but I do miss not being able to sit outside on the deck in the evening to enjoy our meal.
Life goes on in Edinburg. We all get a little older and hopefully a little wiser with each season. Age also takes a toll on a few of our faculties--just ask Barb Anderson!!! Her daughter, Suzie made it known that Barb had called her one day asking for directions home from Grafton, as she was lost!! Of course, Suzie loved telling everyone who came into Market On Main. Don't feel bad Barb, as I think most of us have experienced things that makes us shake our heads in wonderment. You've been a good sport with all the ribbing you have gotten.
The State Historical Society held their annual meeting in Edinburg today. Walsh County was the host so it was great when Edinburg was chosen as the place to meet. Individuals from throughout the state were in attendance. The Edinburg Business Club was responsible for their noon meal. It was requested we serve food indigenous to the area, so we served buffalo stew, mashed potatoes, salad, rolls and for dessert, juneberry pie with ice cream. Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal. The group went out to Mike Olafson’s to view the Oxcart Trail and then returned to Edinburg to spend time at the sod house.
Harvest is still going with potatoes and beans. I believe some beet harvest has started also. I suppose the last thing will be the sunflowers. A person has to be careful on the county roads with all the sunflower fields on the sides as deer seem to just pop out of them and run across the roads constantly. It’s stressful driving in North Dakota---not because of the cars, but because of the critters!
Goose hunting is on as we heard shots from out around Peppermint Hill early this morning. I guess there are lots of black geese out there. Also, huge congratulations go to Brandon Kartes. I understand he shot his deer last night and it was a 4 X 4! I am not quite sure what that means, but I am sure it is something terrific.
Our sympathy is extended to Colleen Langerud and Karen Flanagan on the death of their mother, Esther Mullen.
Allen and Judy Sorbo flew with the Fighting Sioux football team to Bellingham, WA for their game tonight against Western Washington. Go Sioux!!! They were in Utah 2 weekends ago. Sioux won.
